Exploring data analytics & visualization, this project illustrates the strength and fluctuation of three currency rates over a ten year period, from 2005-2015. The visualization provides an insight into the relationship between a chosen currency and the various economic factors that affect its value including: GDP, inflation rate, stock exchange data and trade.
Approach
Currencies are evaluated in pairs, making one stronger or weaker to another. Our group decided to use the Swiss Franc as a benchmark to which each chosen currency would be evaluated against. The rationale for choosing the Swiss Franc as the constant was due to the controlled stability of the Swiss economy in regards to GDP, inflation and debt. With an established benchmark our group chose three currencies from different continents: the U.S. Dollar, the Chinese Yuan and the Euro. The next step was to identify the quantifiable variables that could influence a currency and obtain the necessary datasets. The team began in Tableau, creating time-series based line graphs. We then chose to create a more dynamic visualization to optimize that allows for further interaction and exploration.
